Brilliant sunrays held dust motes aloft in columns of bright orange, dispersed in clumps through the galerie mirage. Amongst tall cardboard boxes and extreme clutter, Sienna toiled against a stack of paint-stained easels to slide it across the floor. They didn’t budge, even despite the rippling of muscles in her bare arms. The woman was left exerted with nothing to show for it, leaning back on her heels with sweat lining her prominent brow line.[break][break]

An auction was to be held in the space the next afternoon. Though Sienna certainly hired help to decorate the space before the event, the state of the gallery remained an issue nonetheless. Easels were scattered and left abandoned in every corner. Paint stained every baseboard from there to the entrance. Recent drywall renovations left a thin layer of dust on every first-floor surface. In the midst of all of it, Sienna, woefully unprepared for such physical labor. She was no muscle. Her eyes sought perfection of the artistic kind, not the physical kind. To clean the gallery was a gargantuan, monolithic task she could hardly hope to surmount.[break][break]

She leaned her forehead against the easel stack and exhaled sharply, bracing her arm above her skull. Absolute despondency.

Bishop stomped into the gallery, his heavy boots announcing his entrance with loud footfalls. He hauled a vacuum cleaner with him that he had unearthed from the depths of storage. Upon seeing Sienna leaning against the stack of easels, he paused and chuckled.[break][break]

"Here, trade ya," he called out before resuming his approach. He pushed the vacuum cleaner toward her. "I'll move these into storage and bring up the paints so we can clean up the walls here."[break][break]

He gestured to the paint-splattered baseboard. They just needed touchups, but that wasn't possible unless the floor was vacuumed first.

Relief flooded through Sienna at the sound of Bishop's feet stomping through the gallery. Though she resented the heaviness with which he walked, forever imagining it quite unbecoming of a man who worked in such proximity to very delicate works of art, her urgency to get the gallery clean overshadowed any such petty noxisms. She broke away from the easels with a self-satisfied smile and placed a palm on her cocked hip. What better way to mask genuine relief with overblown, sarcastic overconfidence?[break][break]

"If you insist, my love." Her eyes flashed. "I was doing quite well with it on my own, but who am I to deny the help?"[break][break]

She moved to take the vacuum cleaner offered to her with her heels echoing a methodical clack, clack, clack through the gallery. Before she found it, though, she reached into the inner pocket of her white fur coat and unearthed a crystalline flask from within, jostling with a thick, brown liquid. She untwisted the cap and took a swig but didn't return the cap when she tilted her head down again, wiping away the remnants of whiskey with one taloned finger. Instead, she offered it to Bishop with a half-lidded stare. Medicine. That's what it was, not the remnants of unflattering alcoholism. Whatever she did was always designer, after all.[break][break]

"Here," she smiled, flask in hand. "To make this all go by faster."

When Sienna extended the flask to him, Bishop laughed again — full, throaty, and a little coarse. Taking it from her, he knocked back a hearty swig, relishing the burn of alcohol down his throat. Then he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and returned the flask to her.[break][break]

"Thanks." Grinning, he gave her the vacuum cleaner and moved to the stack of easels. There were simply too many to carry all at once, so he'd have to make a few trips. Hefting a few, he adjusted his grip so that none would clatter to the floor on the way to storage.[break][break]

"Damn, how did this place get so cluttered?" he wondered aloud as he passed Sienna again.

The flask returned to her hand. She held it as if it were a glass artifact, with all the reverence and caution of a future historian looking deep into the ancient past. Though she did not look down at it, with its multifaceted crystalline sides and wolf figurehead on the front, the pad of her fingertip idly rubbed against its ribbed surface. She relished in how the familiarity came rushing back into her, how her tongue swelled up in her throat.[break][break]

Nonetheless, she twisted the cap back on, and it returned to its rightful place on the inside of her coat. This freed up her palms for the vacuum cleaner, which Bishop so helpfully directed into her hands. She supposed she would actually have to clean, then.[break][break]

Not before Bishop made a quiet quip, though. Just before Sienna flipped the 'on' switch for the vacuum, she glanced up to slant Bishop's form in her gaze. A smile curled like ivy up her face.[break][break]

"How it gets so messy?" she echoed. "Why, probably so Seraphine can give you something to do. Imagine what would happen if our dear handyman got bored?"[break][break]

She laughed, then continued with the vacuum cleaner as if the manic tittering that came from her maw was of no consequence.

He heard Sienna's retort before he disappeared down the stairs into storage, but the vacuum roared to life, drowning out any possible retort he could muster. So he deposited the stack of easels where they belonged and brought back with him two paintbrushes and a can of paint that matched the color of the baseboards.[break][break]

They worked quickly, both eager to finish their tasks so they wouldn't be stuck cleaning for the entirety of that afternoon. Afterward, Bishop sat on one of the benches where Seraphine's clients rested during meetings, lounging with his arms slung over the back of it.[break][break]

"So, do you paint too?" he asked Sienna. They had not been working together for long, considering Seraphine had only hired Bishop a few weeks ago. He found he didn't know his coworker very well. "You ever gonna hang your own stuff up in the gallery?"
